The cause of flickering lights can be many things; from old breakers and equipment to loose connections. However, more recently we’ve had a high volume of calls for flickering lights which have turned out to be LED bulbs controlled by older, non-LED compatible dimmers. 1. Batteries that are weak can trigger a random warning chirp. For some reason, this always seems to happen at 2 or 3 in the morning! 2. Sanding or other dust sources can cause nuisance chirping. Often, there is a small screen which can be vacuumed or blown out with compressed air. 3. In Winter, there may have been warm moist air which escaped to the attic in extreme cold and ran back down the wires in the conduit as water, shorting out the detector. 4. Age. Detectors become less accurate with age and “false alarms” are common. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years.
